When i play css on different servers, my pc stutters.
The ping is fine and my internet connecting is good
the following is set in css
cl_cmdrate 80
cl_updaterate 80
cl_rate 20000

My graphics card is a ATI Radeon 9250 (i know it's a shit card)
Pent 2.8 512mb mem

Apart from change the vid card, any ideas to stop the stuttering?

also if it's the card, what card would be better? (under ?100)

try putting this in your cstrike\cfg\autoexec.cfg:

uninstall your current graphics driver and download+install this one:
http://www.ngohq.com/home.php?page=Files&go=cat&dwn_cat_id=14 (omega catalyst 3.8.252, latest that works with your card)

maybe change your antivirus program to one that doesn't eat much cpu (like avast free home edition - www.avast.com) or exclude your steam folder from on-access scanning.

update advice for gfx card: geforce 6600 or better (depends on how much you'd like to spend)

as an addition you might be helped with another 512 megs of RAM, but I think a new gfx card will give you more performance

Do i copy that list and paste it to the autoexec.cfg?

oh and make sure you don't have any up/downloads running (emule/torrent/newsgroups) while you play, because this will also give you stuttering performance. but i think that isn't the case here because you said your internet connection is ok.

Tried some of those and is working a lot better.

Movement is a lot better, but still lags abit when shooting or it could be just me being slow and crap.

The vid card driver didnt work, it wouldn't let me load games from steam. i.e. cs:s, dods, the ship. So i had to load the old driver back

Instead of changing the antivirus software, i just turned it off while im playing games.

Just a thought, Do you think formating the harddrive would help?

I think you can just ignore these steam messages about your drivers... they should work.
A format is always good, you could start with defragmenting your harddisk though...

I just thought i'll tell you the latest on my heap of shit.

Im still lagging a bit, but only if there is more then 20 people on the server.

So far i have doubled the memory from 512mb to 1024mb(that's the maximum i can go on this heap). i've changed my antivirus software from norton to avast which has made my pc a lot quicker. i use a program called Free Ram http://www.download.com/3000-2086-10070530.html which frees some memory up(surprise surprise). i've bought a new hard drive has well, but havn't loaded it up yet, too much editing to do first on the old drive.

Next month i'm getting a new graphics card, i'm thinking about the nvidia 7800. Will this support directx10? if not can you recommend one that does. Im also getting a new monitor, from an old shitty 15" svga mon to a 20" LCD monitor. And last of all i'm changing my broadband package from 4mb to 20mb. If the F*cker lags after that i will smash it to bits. I would use a gun on it, but knowing me i'll miss.

ok when getting a tft monitor make sure the responsetime in ms is 12 or lower (else you'll get a ghosting effect while playing games)

there are no dx10 compatible cards out yet, the current cards (including the 7800) will be able to run dx10 though, but not with all its features enabled)

got a 7800 here as well and am very pleased with it Smile

the GTX version Smile (me and Sera have a 7800GT so we'd be jealous Wink)

and that monitor has 5ms responsetime so it's good!

My graphics card has arrived. On the the card is a wire connected to the fan, which is also connected to the card and then it splits off and is free and not going no where? any idea what this connects 2?? and will i need a sata connecter to put on top of the chip to power the fan or will it be ok ?

normally u need to connect the gfx card to some sort of power source (on my old card it was one of those small power connectors u usually use for a floppy drive, but I've also seen ones that normally connect to a cdrom player)

on my current 7800gt i think it's a connector with 4 holes that should be connected somewhere... maybe there's an extra connector/splitter/converter in the box?
