Title: Need help
Post by: bobsyouruncleuk on April 17, 2007, 10:07:34 PM
When i play css on different servers, my pc stutters.
The ping is fine and my internet connecting is good
the following is set in css
cl_cmdrate 80
cl_updaterate 80
cl_rate 20000

My graphics card is a ATI Radeon 9250 (i know it's a shit card)
Pent 2.8 512mb mem

Apart from change the vid card, any ideas to stop the stuttering?

also if it's the card, what card would be better? (under ?100)

Thanks for your help

try putting this in your cstrike\cfg\autoexec.cfg:

fps_max 90
cl_cmdrate 80
cl_updaterate 100
rate 25000

in addition you could add lowfps settings in your autoexec.cfg:

Code:
//_Set Netcode vars_
cl_cmdrate "101"
cl_interp "0.01"
cl_interpolate "1"
cl_lagcomp_errorcheck "0" // Disables lagcompensation error checking, only needed if you're having any registration/loss/choke problems.
cl_lagcompensation "1"
cl_updaterate "101"
cl_smooth "1"
rate "25000"

//_Set MP vars_
mp_decals "0" // How many player sprays will be shown.

//_Set Client vars_
cl_drawmonitors "0" // Disables the rendering of ingame "monitors" which contain 3d rendered images.
cl_ragdoll_physics_enable "0" // Disables ragdoll.
cl_show_splashes "0" // Disables water splashes.
cl_phys_props_enable "1" // Enables Phsyics Props.
cl_phys_props_max "50" // Maximum amount of Physics props allowed.
cl_forcepreload "1" // Forces the game to load all texture and model information into memory on map load.
cl_restrict_server_commands "0" // Compatible/needed with serverplugins

//_Set Render vars_
r_decals "0" // Disables decals.
r_drawbatchdecals "1" // Enables the rendering of decals in batch.
r_decal_cullsize "9999" // Any decals under this size are not rendered.
r_rootlod "2" // Base lod of the model in the memory.
r_lod "-1" // Different level of details on models. -1 = Variable at distance. 0 = None. 1 = Minor. 2 = Less minor.
r_modellodscale "1.0" // The transitioning power of LOD.
r_drawmodeldecals "0" // Models decals, I.E. Blood.
r_shadowmaxrendered "32" // Max shadows the game will render.
r_shadows "0" // Disables shadows (Change to 1 if you like them.)

uninstall your current graphics driver and download+install this one:
http://www.ngohq.com/home.php?page=Files&go=cat&dwn_cat_id=14 (omega catalyst 3.8.252, latest that works with your card)

maybe change your antivirus program to one that doesn't eat much cpu (like avast free home edition - www.avast.com) or exclude your steam folder from on-access scanning.

update advice for gfx card: geforce 6600 or better (depends on how much you'd like to spend)

as an addition you might be helped with another 512 megs of RAM, but I think a new gfx card will give you more performance

Thxs Lag

I'll try some of these tonight

also what do you mean by download add lowfps settings in your autoexec.cfg:?

Do i copy that list and paste it to the autoexec.cfg?

sorry, the download shouldnt be there, i changed the text now ;)

oh and make sure you don't have any up/downloads running (emule/torrent/newsgroups) while you play, because this will also give you stuttering performance. but i think that isn't the case here because you said your internet connection is ok.

Lag

Tried some of those and is working a lot better.

Movement is a lot better, but still lags abit when shooting or it could be just me being slow and crap.

The vid card driver didnt work, it wouldn't let me load games from steam. i.e. cs:s, dods, the ship. So i had to load the old driver back

Instead of changing the antivirus software, i just turned it off while im playing games.

Just a thought, Do you think formating the harddrive would help?

I think you can just ignore these steam messages about your drivers... they should work.
A format is always good, you could start with defragmenting your harddisk though...

Lag

I just thought i'll tell you the latest on my heap of shit.

Im still lagging a bit, but only if there is more then 20 people on the server.

So far i have doubled the memory from 512mb to 1024mb(that's the maximum i can go on this heap). i've changed my antivirus software from norton to avast which has made my pc a lot quicker. i use a program called Free Ram http://www.download.com/3000-2086-10070530.html which frees some memory up(surprise surprise). i've bought a new hard drive has well, but havn't loaded it up yet, too much editing to do first on the old drive.

Next month i'm getting a new graphics card, i'm thinking about the nvidia 7800. Will this support directx10? if not can you recommend one that does. Im also getting a new monitor, from an old shitty 15" svga mon to a 20" LCD monitor. And last of all i'm changing my broadband package from 4mb to 20mb. If the F*cker lags after that i will smash it to bits. I would use a gun on it, but knowing me i'll miss.

ok when getting a tft monitor make sure the responsetime in ms is 12 or lower (else you'll get a ghosting effect while playing games)

there are no dx10 compatible cards out yet, the current cards (including the 7800) will be able to run dx10 though, but not with all its features enabled)

got a 7800 here as well and am very pleased with it :)

Thxs for the info.

The monitor i'm getting is this:

Also what is the best nvidia 7800 card to get?

Title: Re: Need help
Post by: Lag on June 21, 2007, 01:50:57 PM
the GTX version :) (me and Sera have a 7800GT so we'd be jealous ;))

and that monitor has 5ms responsetime so it's good!

My graphics card has arrived. On the the card is a wire connected to the fan, which is also connected to the card and then it splits off and is free and not going no where? any idea what this connects 2?? and will i need a sata connecter to put on top of the chip to power the fan or will it be ok ?

normally u need to connect the gfx card to some sort of power source (on my old card it was one of those small power connectors u usually use for a floppy drive, but I've also seen ones that normally connect to a cdrom player)

on my current 7800gt i think it's a connector with 4 holes that should be connected somewhere... maybe there's an extra connector/splitter/converter in the box?

At long last, i've ordered my new graphics card. It took 5 attempts on ebay to sell the old one. Plus i've i had some unexpected Bills to pay. I've ordered BFG 7800GS 256 CARD.
What do i change my autoexec file back to? Also will my heap be able to play ut3 and tf2? thxs for your help.

if I were you I'd keep my autoexec as it is (with the tweaked settings), the more fps the better!

I think it's the psu. i'm going to try a different one on it tonight.

Title: Re: Need help
Post by: Lag on February 12, 2008, 11:40:26 AM
if the pc doesnt turn itself on when u press the power button it's most likely the psu. if another psu fails as well it's prolly your mainboard...

What pc should i get next? AMD or Intel, Dual core or Quad core. How much memory should I get?

Any Info will be helpful.

Thanks

AMD or Intel doesn't really matter. At least Dual-core (Quad-core would be even better of course but that'll cost ya)

I'd go for a minimum of 2GB RAM.

Just go as high as you can afford tbh ;)

Yeah, The Memory prices are very low at the moment. So i think 2 gig's or even 4 gig's of ram are a good option.
But do keep in mind that u need an 64Bit O.S. if u go above 3.2 gig's of RAM.

but a new pc would prolly also mean another new gfx card, while u just bought an AGP one u'll now need a PCI-e version ;)

Tell me about it. I spent about ?140 on that card. I'm hoping to get a good card in the pc when I buy it. Is a Nvidia 8500 gt 1024mb any good?

Title: Re: Need help
Post by: Kindvall on February 15, 2008, 03:32:22 PM
For gaming i would take the 8600GT or above... the 8500GT just can't cut it at newer games in decent resolutions. (Didnt know the 8500GT came with 1024 btw,)

And de 8600GT and above runs the newer games at a reasonable resolutions for a very reasonable price!

What do u think Lag?

my 8600GT does the job very well :)

I'm so happy now. I've just ordered my new pc. What do you think?

 http://www.meshcomputers.com/Default.aspx?PAGE=PRODUCTVIEWPAGE&USG=PRODUCT&ENT=PRODUCT&KEY=347335&APPS=241270

I changed it from a triple to quad core and changed the graphics card to 8600 gt

Should be here within two weeks.

Looking forward to play with you Lag on TF2 and everybody else on CS:S. Thanks for all your help and advice.
